Cuban Technique from the National School of Art

Key discipline for the comprehensive development of the dancer. Synthesis between universal modern dance and Cuban folklore.

What is Afro Contemporary and why is it key for the dancer?

Afro Contemporary is a discipline created in Cuba and studied at the ENA (National School of Art of Cuba). It is considered a synthesis between universal modern dance and Cuban folklore, and is key to improving all aspects of the dancer.

This discipline will be integrated into our professional dance training curriculum endorsed by the CID-UNESCO (International Dance Council of UNESCO in Paris). Classes focus on training and technical refinement aimed at highlighting the quality of the dancer.

The course consists of a technical warm-up part, followed by a technical-physical part composed of varied exercises that will be applied in a sequence in the last phase of the class.

At Farray's we have different teaching levels so everyone can have access to this magnificent discipline that will prepare your body in an integral way.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Afro Contemporary classes

What exactly is Afro Contemporary?

Afro Contemporary is a discipline created in Cuba at the National School of Art (ENA) that fuses universal modern dance techniques (Graham, Limón, Cunningham) with Cuban folklore (Yoruba rumba, Orishas, polyrhythm). It is considered the key discipline for comprehensive dancer development.

Do I need prior experience to start?

No, at Farray's we have different levels from initiation to advanced. The Farray Method® is specifically designed so that Europeans without Cuban cultural background can learn effectively.

What is the structure of a class?

Each class follows the ENA structure: 1) Technical warm-up (dissociation, coordination), 2) Technical-physical exercises (strength, flexibility), 3) Applied sequence where everything learned is put into practice.

What are the physical benefits of Afro Contemporary?

Afro Contemporary improves coordination, body dissociation, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and muscle tone. A class can burn 300-480 calories per hour with simultaneous strength and flexibility work.

Who teaches the classes?

Classes are taught by Yunaisy Farray (master trained at ENA Cuba, CID-UNESCO recognized), Charlie Breezy and Alejandro Miñoso (certified instructors in Cuban methodology). All have direct training from the National School of Art of Cuba.

Will Afro Contemporary help me improve in other styles?

Absolutely. Afro Contemporary is considered the universal technical base for dancers. Improves body dissociation, musicality and coordination that transfer directly to any other style: urban, Latin, contemporary, flamenco...

What is special about ENA methodology?

The ENA methodology is the systematization of Afro Contemporary created by Ramiro Guerra in 1959 and perfected over 65 years. It is the official reference in the dance world, recognized by institutions like CID-UNESCO.

Can I try a class before enrolling?

Yes, we offer welcome classes so you can experience Afro Contemporary before committing. Contact us to book your welcome class.

What clothes should I wear to class?

Comfortable, fitted clothing that allows seeing the body line (leggings, tights, dance pants). Dance socks optional, you can go barefoot. Bring water bottle and small towel.

What does it mean that it is CID-UNESCO endorsed training?

CID-UNESCO (International Dance Council, Paris) endorsement guarantees that Farray's training meets international quality standards. It certifies both the authenticity of the technique and the professional level of teaching.

Is it suitable for aspiring dance professionals?

Absolutely. Afro Contemporary is integral to professional dance curricula worldwide. At Farray's we prepare students for professional dance with the same methodology used in conservatories and official academies.

How long does it take to notice improvements?

With regular training (2-3 classes per week), students notice improvements in body dissociation and musicality in the first 4-6 weeks. Technical transformation is progressive and cumulative.

Is Afro Contemporary very physically demanding?

Afro Contemporary is demanding but adaptable to each level. At Farray's we structure classes so that each student can progress at their own pace without risk of injury.

What is the difference between Afro Contemporary and other contemporary styles?

Afro Contemporary (DCC) specifically fuses modern technique with Cuban folklore, including polyrhythm and body dissociation that do not exist in other contemporary styles (lyrical, floor, release...). It is a more comprehensive and technically demanding discipline.
