Afro Jazz

The unique fusion between Africa and contemporary Jazz

A discipline for all levels combining Cuban Afro Contemporary technique with the elegance and musicality of Jazz dance. From beginners to advanced.

What is Afro Jazz?

Afro Jazz is a creative fusion combining the technical and expressive richness of Afro Contemporary with the lines, projection and musicality of Jazz dance. An accessible discipline for everyone that develops body mastery progressively.

Unlike other styles, Afro Jazz simultaneously works the power of African movements with Jazz elegance, creating a unique movement vocabulary. Whether you are starting out or already have experience, you will find your place.

In each class we work on coordination, musicality and interpretation adapted to your level. From fundamentals to the most complex sequences, each student progresses at their own pace.

Class structure includes technical warm-up, diagonal exercises for traveling and projection, and mirror work for choreography. A proven methodology that works for beginners and advanced dancers.

Frequently Asked Questions about Afro Jazz

What level do I need for Afro Jazz classes?

Afro Jazz requires previous dance experience. It is not a style for absolute beginners. If you have danced Jazz, Contemporary, Afro Contemporary or have previous technical training, you can follow the classes.

What is the difference between Afro Jazz and Afro Contemporary?

Afro Contemporary focuses on Cuban ENA techniques and Afro-Cuban folklore. Afro Jazz fuses that base with Jazz dance elements: lines, extensions, spatial projection and more varied musicality.

What is the structure of an Afro Jazz class?

Each 60-90 minute class includes: progressive technical warm-up, diagonal exercises (traveling, jumps, turns) and mirror work for choreography and repertoire.

Will Afro Jazz help me improve in other styles?

Absolutely. Afro Jazz develops complex coordination, advanced musicality, improvisation ability and versatility. All these skills transfer to any other style you practice.

Who teaches the Afro Jazz classes?

Classes are taught by Yunaisy Farray, CID-UNESCO master trained at Cuba's National School of Art. Her unique training allows her to teach the Afro+Jazz fusion with technical rigor and expressiveness.

What does it mean that the academy is endorsed by CID-UNESCO?

CID-UNESCO (International Dance Council) is UNESCO's official body for dance. The endorsement certifies that our methodology meets international professional training standards.

Do we work on improvisation in classes?

Yes. Improvisation is a fundamental part of Afro Jazz. We develop the ability to create movement in real time while maintaining stylistic coherence and connection with music.

Can I try a class before enrolling?

Yes, you can book a welcome class. Note that you need previous dance experience to follow the class level.

What clothes and footwear should I wear?

Comfortable clothing that allows wide movement (leggings, dance pants, fitted t-shirt). Footwear depends on the surface: Jazz shoes, dance socks or barefoot as indicated.

Is Afro Jazz suitable for professional training?

Yes. Although Afro Jazz is open to all levels, professional dancers will find in this discipline a way to expand their versatility and movement vocabulary. It is ideal for both beginners and advanced dancers.

Are groups small?

Yes. We limit spots to guarantee individualized technical correction. Afro Jazz requires personalized attention not possible in massive groups.

How many calories are burned in an Afro Jazz class?

An Afro Jazz class is a demanding physical workout that can burn 400-600 calories per hour, working strength, flexibility, coordination and cardiovascular endurance.

Can I combine Afro Jazz with other styles at the academy?

We recommend combining Afro Jazz with Afro Contemporary and/or Jazz for comprehensive training. At Farray's we have over 25 styles available.

Where can I learn Afro Jazz with professional methodology?

Farray's International Dance Center is the only academy in the world teaching Afro Jazz with professional methodology and CID-UNESCO endorsement. We are located in Barcelona, Calle Entença 100, 5 minutes from Plaza España.
